As grand format printing specialists, shade cloth printing is one of the formats we specialise in here at Mesh Direct. Shade cloth (also known in the industry as ‘scrim’) is an affordable fence signage and coverage option for those in the construction and development industries. Because of its practical, durable nature, it has a variety of uses across a range of different industries.
Created from a permeable substrate, shade cloth is perfect for the harsh (and often windy) Aussie climate. The perforated design allows wind loads to pass through the material, ensuring light and low risk loads on the attached structure.
Shade cloth also comes in full printed shade cloth, half printed and plain shade cloth options, so you can make it work for whatever your purpose is.
Speaking of purposes, let’s get to the top 3 uses for shade cloth printing…
By far the most common usage of shade cloth printing is for temporary fence signage and branding. Developers and event coordinators alike often make the most of the under-utilised advertising space shade cloth provides.
This is a fantastic way to create brand recognition for your company, and to advertise any upcoming developments or events.
Another common use for shade cloth printing, is for use as a device to block out the view of construction sites from the street. There’s nothing more unsightly than an untidy development site. Often the site is in disarray, with equipment strewn about the place as well as uncovered scaffolding as an eye sore.
Shade cloth, particularly printed shade cloth is a great option for containing the mess and disorganisation of a construction site, and ensuring that your development looks as professional as possible.
Finally, another of the top uses for shade cloth printing jobs is to contain dust, and for hygiene purposes. Often throughout the lifespan of a development, things like materials are cut and moved on site, and dust can accumulate. The best developers are concerned with the comfort and safety of the general public, and so often employ shade cloth to contain the dust from the site, and for other hygiene purposes.

Shade cloth has numerous other benefits as well. It’s cheap and accessible, making it perfect for one off projects. Practically anyone can use and install it, which means it’s great from just about everything from garden renovations to large scale developments.

Here at Mesh Direct, we understand that the terminology associated with grand format printing can get confusing. With such a vast range of printed banners and signage solutions available, it’s no wonder the options seem overwhelming at times. One of the questions we receive most often from our clients is “what is full print and partial printed shade cloth?”.
With over ten years experience in the print and construction industries, we’ve developed printing options for all types of businesses and their needs, which is where the full print and partial printed shade cloth varieties come in. So let’s explore what these options entail…
Both partial printed shade cloth and full print shade cloth are created from the same durable, premium quality materials. Our shade cloth meets all necessary building standards and uses fully UV stabilised inks for non-fade printing, no matter what type of shade cloth you opt for.
Our product has 70% light reductio as well as knotted monofilament, high-density polyethylene which provides strength and durability. Our shade cloth is crafted from 170 GSM for easy handling and uses reinforced knotted, ‘button-hole’ eyelets at both the top and bottom of the material for great stability.
But now let’s go into a bit more detail in terms of the differences between full print and partial printed shade cloth…
Partial printed shade cloth is a great option for those who are looking to showcase their logo and business details in an understated way on their construction site.
When it come to partial printed shade cloth, the artwork is printed on a white background (no more than 50% of the shade cloth is printed on). This option is perfect for displaying a looped logo across a range of fences, or your business details like website and phone number.
Because it’s a smaller print job, the partial printed shade cloth is the more budget-friendly option for those who face financial constraints.
Full printed shade cloth is just what it sounds like – where the entirety of the shade cloth is printed on in full. This option is fantastic for making a high-impact impression on passersby, or to create an overall uniform aesthetic for events like festivals.
Naturally as this is a bigger print job, full printed shade cloth has a higher price point, however Mesh Direct ensures that all its prices are competitive and affordable for both large and small businesses alike.
We’ve seen both options make valuable and high-converting contributions to many a job site, and whether you go full or partial printed shade cloth, the print resolution is always incredible.
Shade cloth is ideal for long run sites, and is always easily installed with cable ties.

Printed shade cloth or also commonly known as scrim is a budget friendly marketing solution which can provide high impact results for a project or advertising your brand. Shade cloth or scrim is a permeable substrate which allows wind to pass through easily, creating a light load on the structure to which it is attached.
Printed scrim can incorporate your business logo, colour schemes and fonts. However, it is not recommended for overly elaborate designs or photos but for logos or solid text, printed shade cloth (or scrim) is ideal.
Both full and partial printing options are available depending on the budget and needs of our clients. Scrim is a very popular method of construction site advertising, or scaffold branding, although it is also often seen at music festivals and sporting events as a budget friendly printed banner option. Because of its cost we recommend scrim where clients have longer runs and where the quality of print is not a priority.
Shade cloth fabric complies with all OH&S requirements under the relevant building codes. As standard, shade cloth printing used fully UV stabilised inks and substrates, ensuring that your sign will last and not fade for at least 12 months. Printed shade cloth can be used for construction and development sites, retail sites, community and school locations and large-scale events of all types.
Installation
Shade cloth is usually fixed to temporary fencing via cable ties which makes the installation process quick and easy. The substrate can be installed on scaffolds, temporary fences, chain wire fences and, as well as, building facades to ensure your brand has excellent exposure and is customised to your site.
